Fresh Japanese Cuisine in Penticton

MAKU is a Japanese-inspired fast-casual restaurant located just a one-minute walk from Okanagan Lake in Penticton, British Columbia.

We offer fresh, casual, and wholesome meals inspired by the Okanagan lifestyle. Our menu also includes a wide variety of gluten-free and vegan options, allowing more guests to enjoy our food.

A New Chapter Begins

In April 2023, we purchased KOYA Penticton and began independently owning and operating the restaurant.

In the summer of 2024, we launched our seasonal food trailer under the name MAKU.

The name “MAKU” comes from the Japanese kanji character “幕,” which represents the opening of a new chapter. With this meaning in mind, we rebranded the restaurant as MAKU in November 2025 to better reflect our vision for the future.

The kanji character “創” in our logo means “creation.” It represents our goal of combining traditional Japanese food culture with modern ideas to create something new.

We aim to be a welcoming neighborhood restaurant where people can easily stop by and return to again and again—a place where everyone feels at home.

The Taste of MAKU

One of the things that makes MAKU unique is our selection of homemade gluten-free sauces.

We prepare many of our sauces in-house using our own original recipes, allowing us to maintain consistent quality and flavor.

Our homemade sauces include:

• Teriyaki sauce
• White, black, and spicy poke sauces
• Vegan sesame dressing
• Spicy mayo
• Ramen spicy paste

All of these sauces are gluten-free.

Although making our sauces from scratch requires additional time and effort, we believe it allows us to offer distinctive flavors while maintaining the quality and consistency our customers expect.

The balance of speed, quality, and menu variety is what defines MAKU.

We often receive inquiries about purchasing our homemade sauces. However, to maintain their freshness and quality, they are currently available only in single-use portions with meals purchased from our restaurant.

Large Group Orders

We accept advance pickup orders for large groups.

Orders can be placed by email or through our online ordering page. For groups of more than 20 people, please contact us at least one week in advance so we can help arrange your group lunch or meal order.

MAKU Food Truck

Please note that we will not be at the Penticton Community Market on August 29. Instead, you can find us all day at the TRUE RHYTHM FESTIVAL in Okanagan Lake Park.
