Get Ready for Spooktacular

As dusk falls over R.J. Haney Heritage Village & Museum, jack-o’-lanterns begin to glow, shadows stretch between the historic buildings, and strange characters start appearing in unexpected places.

It can only mean one thing.

Spooktacular is back.

On October 24 & 25, the 12-acre Heritage Village will be transformed for two nights of Halloween fun at the 28th Annual Spooktacular. The gates open at 5:00 pm, with plenty to discover whether you are bringing little ghosts and ghouls, teenagers who insist they don’t scare easily, or a group of friends looking for a Halloween night out.

Come early and make a night of it. Grab dinner or a snack from the food vendors, warm up around the campfire and start planning your Halloween adventure.

There is no set route. Spooktacular is happening throughout the Village, so take your time and explore.

Follow the Pumpkin Patch Path beneath the Halloween arch, with games and riddles waiting along the way. Try your luck at the Hocus Pocus Midway, make a Halloween craft or see what strange experiment the Menacing Mad Scientist has underway.

Step inside Mt. Ida Church, find a seat in one of the old wooden pews and settle in for a Halloween tale. Stories suitable for all ages run continuously throughout the evening, so you can drop in whenever you like.

Cross the Bridge of Last Hope and wander along Main Street, where familiar exhibits and storefronts have been transformed for Halloween. Look in the windows, have your fortune told by the Mystical Fortune Teller, capture a Haney Halloween memory at the Photo Studio and keep exploring.

And while you do, keep an eye on the sky.

As the sun disappears and shadows settle over the Village, Spooktacular begins to change.

When darkness falls, the spooks come out.

If you have younger children or prefer your Halloween on the not-so-scary side, make the Fraser Avenue Haunted House and Spook Trail an early stop. Everything opens at 5:00 pm, and we keep the scares family-friendly while there is still daylight.

But if you came to be scared, you may want to wait.

The journey begins inside the Fraser Avenue Haunted House, where live spooks lurk in the shadows, creatures peer from doorways, and unexpected sounds come from places you may not want to investigate too closely.

Make it through, and the Spook Trail is waiting.

Enter through the fog and eerie lights of the Tunnel of Doom, then follow the trail through the trees. Somewhere ahead, a chainsaw is revving. Fog lingers around the pirate ship, lost souls have gathered at the zombie campground, and witches, trolls, ghouls and live spooks are waiting along the way.

You never quite know what will appear around the next corner.

Eventually, just when the trail feels like it may never end, you find your way back into the Village, hopefully with everyone you started with.

That is Spooktacular after dark.
