PENTICTON, British Columbia — Home to an iconic hillside sign that’s even larger than Hollywood’s, Penticton is now earning growing attention as a filming destination. Today, winter scenes from the city’s downtown will be streamed to audiences across North America with the release of Netflix’s newest holiday movie, A Dog’s Perfect Christmas.
With British Columbia’s film and television industry generating approximately $2 billion in annual economic activity, Visit Penticton and the City of Penticton are working together to attract and support future productions. The sector is identified in Visit Penticton’s five-year strategy as an opportunity to support year-round economic activity and grow destination awareness.
Interest in Penticton as a filming location has grown significantly in recent years, with producers and location scouts drawn to the city’s diverse landscapes, film-friendly locations and year-round production potential.
“Film productions support local businesses, create year-round economic activity and showcase Penticton to new audiences,” said Kevin Pearce, Executive Director of Visit Penticton. “What sets Penticton apart is the variety of locations filmmakers can find in one place. The region’s landscapes can double for everything from European vineyards and alpine mountain ranges to beaches and small-town main streets, giving productions lots of flexibility without having to travel far between locations.”
A Dog’s Perfect Christmas, starring Dennis Quaid, features winter scenes at Penticton’s Gyro Park outdoor skating rink and the seasonal 180-foot-long festive light tunnel, which includes more than 30,000 lights. Crews filmed in downtown Penticton over several days, bringing cast, crew and production spending into the community.
“We’re seeing growing interest from production companies and location scouts who recognize the range of locations and opportunities Penticton has to offer,” said Reagan Lovig, Recreation Coordinator for Events and Film at the City of Penticton. “This year alone, five productions expressed interest in filming here, with three ultimately choosing Penticton. As interest continues to grow, we’ll continue to work closely with our partners, including the Okanagan Film Commission, to connect productions with local locations, businesses and resources.”
The Netflix feature joins a growing list of productions recently filmed in Penticton, including Drinkwater, Wild Goat Surf and the upcoming thriller Vested. More information about recent films can be viewed at visitpenticton.com/penticton-netflix-movie.
